|   | | Artificial link structuring was particularly popular a few years ago when
affiliate webmasters used to run large groups of websites (up to 30 at times)
concerning the same business, online gambling portals for example. By being
linked together, the search engines gave the websites high rankings.
These high rankings generated a lot of web traffic and thus made the sites very
profitable. Unfortunately, the days of ALS are pretty much over as search
engines, such as Google and Yahoo, became 'smarter' and began penalizing sites
that relied too heavily on cross linking or ALS.
Many webmasters have tried to get around this problem by registering their sites
in different locations around the globe in the names of family, friends and
colleagues in order to 'hide' their artificial link structures and get different
IP addresses.
However, in order to achieve long term high-ranking websites, it is always
recommended to build sites with genuinely interesting and relevant content that
visitors are actually interested in seeking out, accessing and using.
